Solar energy primarily only requires the power of the sun. The sun is the center of our solar system, and some consider it as the largest star in the world. The US marines, who are required to carry heavy loads of ammunition along with equipment and heavy batteries, will soon be getting easy to carry solar power panels that can energize their equipment. These roll-up solar panels with the size of a placemat can reduce the marines' burden of heavy battle gear to a great extent, says SunFusion Solar.

The US Marines' dependency on batteries and generators for charging their equipment like the GPS, radios and other devices has increased their energy needs manifold since the early 1990s. Some Disadvantages of Solar Energy

After this, the whole panel is covered for protection against damage using glass, which apart from protecting the cells, also allows the rays of the sun to pass through owing to its transparency. Then as the last step of the process, a thermal conducting variety of cement is used to attach the panel to where it is required. This particular variety of cement is rather expensive but help in keeping the cells cool. After this the panel is placed on an elevated surface, facing the sun.
Amorphous Solar Panels:
These types of cells are created by combining dopants and silicon together on a backing medium. This medium or platform can be made of any material, glass, metal and even plastic in order to give the panels a certain degree of flexibility. The difference between the two types is that amorphous cells contain a thin layer of silicon unlike the crystalline cells. This is why this variety is cheaper than the former.

Revenues for Q2 are expected between $500-600M and $2.80-2.95bn or full year 2011. Non GAAP gross margin is projected at 15-17% for Q2 and 17-19% fo the full year."Recognized" MW are projected at between 175-200MW in Q3 and 875-920MW for the full year.

“The changes to Italian solar policy this year have had a significant impact on the global solar market,” said Tom Werner, SunPower president and CEO. “In response, we rebalanced our product allocation in Italy away from power plants and toward our European residential and commercial (R&C) business where demand remains strong. The ability to reallocate our product in the face of market changes is a key feature of SunPower’s vertically integrated, geographically diversified model. However, systems sold through our R&C channel yield less profit per watt than systems deployed in self-developed power plant projects, as reflected in our Q2 outlook. In addition, we expect the current global pricing pressure to persist through 2011 and, as a result, we are planning full-year 2011 non-GAAP gross margins to be in the range of 17% to 19%.

"The changes in global market conditions favor SunPower as we have both the flexibility to rebalance our allocation between downstream channels as well as the technology differentiation to sustain premium pricing compared to lower efficiency systems," continued Werner. "Italy's decision to focus market development on residential and commercial applications instead of large power plants is in line with the trend across Europe, playing to our strengths in the rooftop and carport markets. Our world-leading, high-efficiency solar systems maximize customers' returns, especially in area-constrained applications, positioning us to increase our share in these markets."

"To align with the reallocation of product, we are rebalancing resources to support the growth of our residential and commercial rooftop businesses," said Dennis Arriola, SunPower CFO. "We're taking aggressive steps to actively manage our manufacturing and operating expenses, including working with suppliers to modify contracts to reflect current market conditions. As a result of the changes to Italian solar policy, the company anticipates that its fiscal year 2011 GAAP results will be impacted by certain one-time, pre-tax charges of $14 million to $29 million related to its reallocation strategy, including $11 million to $21 million in the second quarter. The installation will be one of the largest solar energy projects in Santa Barbara County to dateThe solar installation will use over 4,000 high efficiency solar photovoltaic panels on a district-owned, 4 acre land area and convert it into a clean energy producing site. Given the optimal design of the ground-mounted solar system, the district will receive the most advantageous electricity production, which will allow it to stabilize long-term electricity rates, ultimately benefiting its rate payers.



“Laguna County Sanitation District is a classic example of a public entity taking significant environmental actions in its everyday activity. While the district collects and treats wastewater before returning it into the environment, it also uses electricity from the utility grid in order to fulfill its daily commitment,” said Dean Marks, Chief Executive Officer at Premier Power. “The district is also a great example where environmental measures can join forces with capitalism to bring clean, renewable energy into its operations. By locating solar power generating stations on site, the district is making dual-purpose use out of its land, reducing the load on the grid and controlling its costs.”



Joni Gray, Santa Barbara County 4th District Supervisor, added “This project is a move toward energy independence that will protect our ratepayers by giving us greater control over future energy costs. DOE Offers Conditional Loan Guarantee to 20 MW Project ...06.02.2011

U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Nevada Congresswoman Shelley Berkley today announced the offer of a conditional commitment for a $45.6 million loan guarantee by the Department of Energy to support a 20 megawatt AC photovoltaic solar generating facility. The project, sponsored by Fotowatio Renewable Ventures is being supported by DOE with funding from the 2009 Recovery Act. It will be developed approximately 25 miles northeast of Las Vegas, and the project's sponsor estimates it will create 250 jobs at peak construction.



"Today's announcement is yet another sign that Nevada is a major player in the growing solar industry," said Secretary Chu. "Investments like this one, along with the many other clean energy projects underway in the state, will help us to create jobs while positioning the U.S. to lead in the global energy race."



"This announcement clearly shows that Nevada is well on its way to becoming a global leader in clean energy job creation," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. "Thanks to public-private partnerships like the loan guarantee program, scores of clean energy companies such as Fotowatio are bringing projects to Nevada to put people back to work by turning our state's abundant clean energy resources into jobs and economic growth."

"It's why I fought so hard to protect the job-creating loan guarantee program when some in Congress were trying to kill the initiative entirely. The Fotowatio PV solar generating facility will include over 90,000 polycrystalline silicon modules attached to single-axis horizontal tracker technology that will capture more energy than fixed-tilt photovoltaic systems. The project, which will be the second largest photovoltaic generation facility in Nevada, is expected to avoid over 31,000 tons of carbon pollution annually. The facility is also expected to produce approximately 55,000 megawatt hours annually, enough to power over 4,700 homes. Power from the project will be sold to Nevada Power Company. The Fotowatio application was received by lender-applicant John Hancock Life Insurance (U.S.A.) under the Financial Institution Partnership Program (FIPP).

Siemens Receives 3 MW PV System Order ...06.01.2011

Siemens Energy has been selected by Syncarpha Capital to provide engineering, procurement and construction services for a 3-megawatt-peak (MWp), ground-based PV power plant in Eastampton, New Jersey.


Construction is scheduled to begin in May 2011 and the plant is scheduled to go online in September 2011.

Syncarpha Capital, an investment company launched to capitalize on opportunities in the alternative energy sector, will finance the solar power plant. Utilizing proven Siemens technology and plant performance guarantees, the solar facility will help to satisfy New Jersey's rapidly growing demand for renewable power.
