Solar Energy for Marines Means Less Burden and More Power

The US marines, who are required to carry heavy loads of ammunition along with equipment and heavy batteries, will soon be getting easy to carry solar power panels that can energize their equipment. These roll-up solar panels with the size of a placemat can reduce the marines' burden of heavy battle gear to a great extent, says SunFusion Solar.

The US Marines' dependency on batteries and generators for charging their equipment like the GPS, radios and other devices has increased their energy needs manifold since the early 1990s. Compared to their counterparts from the 1990s, today's marines carry a number of new equipments like laptops, GPS devices, radios, and other electronic gear that are recharged by the power from generators that run on fuel. This is why, of all the fuel that goes to Afghanistan, almost 30% is used by these generators.

Although the US forces are more lethal today than earlier, they consume vast amounts of energy at the same time. This has resulted in increasing the number of re-supplies and in overloading the soldiers and marines on the field. Carrying heavy loads of batteries, around 20 pounds, to recharge their equipment makes it more difficult for the marines to perform their duties in dangerous and hostile environments.

According to SunFusion Solar, this reflects the need to use renewable energy, like solar energy, to generate electricity for charging military gear on field. Although the U.S military has been researching on renewable energy for more than ten years, the project had gained momentum only when the number of causalities on fuel trucks going into Afghanistan increased.

So, instead of waiting for a complete practical solution to the energy problems on the battlefield, the marine leaders worked on providing at least 80% solution immediately. As a result, the Office of Naval Research came up with a solution in the form of portable solar-and-battery powered panels that can be transported easily, used in rugged conditions and are enough to charge the entire combat post's gear.

These solar panels have been first used and tested by the India Company, which is a part of the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment. The marines of this company have successfully used the individual solar panels with a set of solar powered hybrid generators to recharge their personal equipment for three weeks. This also hints at the possibility of bigger bases being powered by larger solar panels in the future.

According to a representative of SunFusion Solar, the U.S military has exemplified to the rest of the nation on how to create greener energy solutions by tapping the abundant energy of the Sun.
