Building Solar Panels

Solar Panels comprise of photovoltaic cells connected together to generate electricity from solar energy. This effect is termed as Photovoltaic effect. In this article, production of energy from photovoltaic cells will be discussed, as well as their construction.
About Photovoltaic Cells
These solar cells are actually made up of silicon and layers of various other elements, which absorb the photon in the Sun's natural light. This causes the displacement of the electrons allowing them to freely move within the material. It is actually this displacement and movement of electrons that produces electricity.
How to build Solar Panels
As discussed earlier, a solar panel comprises of several photovoltaic cells stacked and connected together, these are then covered by glass to protect the cells from damage. The process involves creating a panel, making solar cells and then placing them within the panel. There are two basic forms of silicon used in solar cells, namely amorphous and crystalline. Following are ways of constructing solar panel using these two forms of silicon:
Crystalline Solar Panels: First the crystalline silicon is cut into wafer like pieces and then these pieces are polished. All perforations and gaps are sealed and substances are added in order to contaminate the silicon which is otherwise entirely pure in nature. Contamination is achieved by using Phosphorus which is used to cover these pieces. This is how contamination by a dopant (Phosphorus) is achieved. After this, in order to assemble these cells, a dark panel is used. The next process is to attach small strips of metals to these cells. These strips will conduct and generate electricity and are placed on the cells facing the sun. After this, the whole panel is covered for protection against damage using glass, which apart from protecting the cells, also allows the rays of the sun to pass through owing to its transparency. Then as the last step of the process, a thermal conducting variety of cement is used to attach the panel to where it is required. This particular variety of cement is rather expensive but help in keeping the cells cool. After this the panel is placed on an elevated surface, facing the sun.
Amorphous Solar Panels:
These types of cells are created by combining dopants and silicon together on a backing medium. This medium or platform can be made of any material, glass, metal and even plastic in order to give the panels a certain degree of flexibility. The difference between the two types is that amorphous cells contain a thin layer of silicon unlike the crystalline cells. This is why this variety is cheaper than the former.
Solar panels are an excellent and environment friendly way to generate electricity using the Earth's natural source of light energy. This reduces overall cost of electricity, plus these solar panels last up to a whole decade, which means you won't have to spend anything on their replacement or maintenance. It is an excellent option for a one time investment that will allow you to reap benefits for years.
